Tdraditionally, a golf trip to Scotland has been a compromise: the good kind of "olde" on the courses, but the bad kind (tiny mattresses, sketchy plumbing, indifferent food) back at the hotel.

A clone of the Chateau Elan property near Atlanta, St. Andrews Bay has American hotel luxury on the inside and great golf on the outside. Rooms start at about $180, and top-end suites ($550) are so big that they have two bathrooms. And each room has views of the town of St. Andrews and the coastline that is being morphed into 36 holes.
